Sundays in the Symphony: The RBSO Returns to Lumpini Park for its 33rd Season
As the cool breeze of January settles over the city, one of Bangkok’s most beloved open-air traditions has returned. The Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra (RBSO), in collaboration with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), officially kicked off its 33rd season of Concert in the Park on January 11, 2026.
Transforming the heart of the city into a lush concert hall, this annual series offers a rare treat: world-class orchestral music performed free of charge under the open sky.
A Soundtrack for the City
Taking place every Sunday evening at the iconic Sala Bhirombhakdi (the park's famous pavilion), the 2026 season promises a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere. It is the perfect antidote to the Bangkok hustle—families spreading out picnic mats, joggers pausing to listen, and friends gathering as the golden hour light hits the lake.
Under the baton of renowned Thai conductors Dr. Vanich Potavanich and Dr. Nora-ath Chanklum, the RBSO is known for shedding the "stiffness" of a formal concert hall. Instead, they curate a lively mix designed for everyone. Expect to hear:
- Pop Classics: Orchestral arrangements of Western and Thai hits.
- Cinema & Stage: Sweeping scores from famous movie soundtracks and toe-tapping Broadway musical numbers.
- Thai Heritage: Exquisite arrangements of traditional Thai tunes that resonate deeply with local audiences.
- Light Classical: Accessible masterpieces that showcase the orchestra's technical prowess.
Each week will also spotlight different guest soloists, vocalists, and rising young talents, ensuring no two Sunday evenings are exactly alike.
2026 Season Schedule
The performances run for eight consecutive Sundays. The music begins at 5:30 PM, just as the heat of the day begins to fade.
- January: 11th, 18th, 25th
- February: 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd
- March: 1st (Season Finale)
Admission is completely free. No tickets or reservations are required—just walk in and find a spot on the grass.
Know Before You Go: The Venue
For the uninitiated, the concert takes place in Lumpini Park, Bangkok’s first public park and arguably its most famous "green lung."
Did you know? Lumpini Park has a royal history. In the 1920s, King Rama VI issued a royal decree to donate this land—originally royal property called Thung Sala Daeng—to the public. He envisioned a space where city dwellers could enjoy fresh air and shade. A statue of the King stands at the park's entrance today, overseeing the very leisure he gifted to the nation a century ago.
The concert venue, Sala Bhirombhakdi, is an open pavilion that allows the sound to carry naturally across the lawns, creating an acoustic experience that many argue rivals indoor halls due to the unique ambiance of birdsong and rustling leaves accompanying the music.
About the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra (RBSO)
The ensemble behind the magic, the RBSO, has been a pillar of Thailand's cultural scene since 1982. Founded under the Royal Patronage of the then-Crown Prince (now His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn), it was later granted royal permission to carry the prestigious title "Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra."
Over the decades, the RBSO has hosted a pantheon of musical giants, from conductors like Loris Tjeknavorian and Mikhail Pletnev to its current Music Director, Michel Tilkin. While they regularly perform in grand halls like the Thailand Cultural Centre, the Concert in the Park series remains their most accessible and community-focused project, bringing high culture directly to the people.
Pro-Tips for Attendees
Arrive Early: While the concert starts at 5:30 PM, the best spots on the lawn near the pavilion fill up by 4:30 PM or 5:00 PM.
Bring a Picnic: There are no strict food restrictions on the lawn. It is common to see locals enjoying street food, snacks, and non-alcoholic beverages while they listen.
Dress Code: Casual. This is a park event; shorts, t-shirts, and sandals are entirely appropriate.
